Stephen Dalton

Browsing through Hotshoe Magazine Issue 150, I came across Stephen Dalton's work.
He is a British wildlife photographer whose work mostly aims to capture animals in motion. He is enabled to do this through the use of home-made experimental flash equipment.

I find the mix between natural and flash lighting to be a very interesting one. The subject matter that he focuses on means this equipment is a necessity, without it capturing these animals in motion such as this would be near impossible. The set-up he uses consists mainly of homemade equipment, including a 10kg battery pack. The high speed capture is allowed through the use of an invisible sensor beam, which when broken, automatically takes the photograph.

The resulting images in which the flash has been used give a feel to the images much like that of Gregory Crewdson's work. The work's feel is amplified when seen together, with the light giving the images an almost high-end studio feel despite the majority of the subjects being wild and shot outside.

I find his work a very good example of what can be achieved if you set yourself no limits and can picture an end goal as to what you would like to produce.
